Interview with Lisbon-based vinyl DJ Diogo Lacerda

Diogo Lacerda became one of the most influential and also most booked selectors in Lisbon over the last few years. Championing a new sound that still has to establish itself in the still very young, and yet not so much refined but fast growing local scene. You can always expect the unexpected, in Lisbon he’s very well known for his extremely long afterhour sets and playful warm-ups during his residencies. Nowadays Lacerda holds several residencies in and outside of Lisbon among those are the Assemble Music Showcases at Ministerium Club and at the riverside at Ribeira das Naus, Radiant at 512 in London, LowMoneyMusicLove Showcases and at the famous Bar do Fundo at Praia Grande near Lisbon.

We caught up with Diogo Lacerda on surprises and digging up new music:

Set the tone for us. Why the arts?

Beauty vs. Obscurity

Which comes first when you’re producing – the sound or the idea?

The idea for me!

What’s on your current playlist?

Freddy Fresh, Visitor, Denard Henry, Keith Leblanc, Plantastik, The Exaltics, Erotek

Tell us about the chemistry you have with your fans on stage.

I always try to surprise myself – create some confusion and make them dance!

What techniques do you experiment with to get your original sound?

I’m not really producing original material at the moment, I’m only really editing music to play and having fun with it. Production will come later!

Take us through a day in the recording studio.

These have been some busy months of playing, digging and getting to know music in all its styles – my recording days will come further ahead!

Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “this is what I want to do”?

I have never been interested in dedicating 100% of my daily life to music, that would mean I would have to depend on it to pay my bills. Instead, I like to do other things for a living and let the music fill my everyday moments with magic and joy.

What do you keep close by while you’re playing a set?

My record bag!

Any emerging artists on your radar?

Midibasics, Berllioz, Zoy aka Luhk

What gets your creative juices flowing?

Fun, friends and nature!

Take us through your collection of gear, tech or software that accompanies your creative expression.

My most important gear will always be my records, and any turntables I can get my hands on.

Any side projects you’re working on?

I frequently collaborate with Lowmoney Musiclove, doing graphi- design on the records and Posters for the parties etc.

How have you refined your craft since you entered the industry?

More discipline and rigorous digging.

Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you this year

I’ve got some interesting gigs lined up for this summer; Barcelona, Praia Grande and LISB-ON.
